World Premiere Music Video “The Girl I Am”… An Inspiring Anti-Bullying Anthem

Women You Should Know is honored to be the official host of the world premiere of “The Girl I Am,” the debut single and music video by PureLand, a pop duo featuring classically trained musicians, WYSK Laurie Rubin (internationally acclaimed mezzo-soprano) and Jenny Taira (composer/pianist). It’s a song about the isolation that so many teenage girls face. It’s also an inspiring anti-bullying anthem written from a deeply personal place.

Laurie, who was bullied in middle school for being “different” (she is blind and has been since birth), told WYSK, “The song is meant to give voice to the fears girls are afraid to confide in anyone.” She added, “They need an anthem to reassure them that life does get better, a song to encourage them to understand their beauty which makes them unique, and will eventually make them confident, happy adults. I needed a song like that as a teenager, and so many of the teens we perform ‘The Girl I Am’ for tell us it gives them hope.”

Friends should be the ones to lift you up, not the ones to watch you fall.

Laurie_Jenny_PureLandLaurie and Jenny, who met at the Yale School of Music, have been concertizing together for ten years, as well as performing opera arias, art songs, and musical theater all around the United States and the world. These dynamic, multi-talented women began writing original pop music as PureLand in 2012.

Along with educator Carolyn Lee, Laurie and Jenny also co-founded Ohana Arts, a performing arts festival and school in Hawaii for youth ages 8-18, which provides intensive training in acting, dance, and singing, as well as music composition and songwriting. A number of students from Ohana Arts are featured in the music video for “The Girl I Am.”

Beyond their musical partnership, Laurie and Jenny have also been a couple for eleven years and just got married on August 24, 2013. Congrats ladies!

Their single and music video for “The Girl I Am” will be released on the full-length CD called “Summer Night in Winter” available on Studio Cloud Nine Records.

THE GIRL I AM LYRICS

You were the hope of a confidant when I was quite alone.
But in your presence, it was clear that I was on my own.
There I stood, a normal girl with teenage hopes and dreams.
But super imposed upon my image was a shadow dark and mean.
You were cool, so I thought you’d change their minds.
You’d show them I was not so different, that I was their kind.
You joined them to talk boys and to play with their hair,
You treated me like I didn’t matter, like I wasn’t even there.

Don’t tell me what I  deserve, this is how my life should be.
Don’t try to shape the girl I am.
I thought I had bled dry, but still you made me bleed.
You made me hate the girl I am.

When I had you to myself, I wanted to get away,
But I was trapped inside the words you felt compelled to say.
You said I’d never share the moonlight, that I’d never know romance.
I’d never know life’s rich surprises, I’d never have the chance.
The sun’s bright light was growing distant, upstaged by dark clouds,
And slowly I was being ripped to shreds as your voice rang clear and loud.
It doesn’t take a gun to kill, nor a knife to cause deep cuts,
You could have destroyed me, but bouncing back is what I do best.

Don’t tell me what I deserve, this is how my life should be.
Don’t try to shape the girl I am.
I thought I had bled dry, but still you made me bleed.
You made me hate the girl I am.

Don’t give the power of your dreams to anyone at all.
Friends should be the ones to lift you up, not the ones to watch you fall.

To the girl who hates her body, to the girl who has no friends,
To the girl who cries herself to sleep, don’t fret, it’s not the end.
Just take a look inside yourself to know the best in you.
Now I know life’s rich surprises, and I know that you will to.
I share the moonlight with my love, and I laugh with my friends.
I make the best of memories, and I don’t want life to end.
If anyone should knock you down, and take your dreams away,
Just get right up and stand up tall, and this is what you say,

Don’t tell me what I deserve, this is how my life should be.
Don’t try to shape the girl I am.
My skin is tough as steel and you can’t make me bleed.
Because I love the girl I am.
Because I love the girl I am.
