Based on the truly asinine comments he made earlier this week, over the last 48 hours, British biochemist Tim Hunt managed to score himself more worldwide press than when he was awarded the 2001 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine and knighted in 2006, combined.

The seemingly smart scientist, and very stupid man has since apologized, as well as resigned from his position as honorary professor at University College London. But not before lots of “girls” in science took to Twitter to show the world how #distractinglysexy they really are.

So before you delight in the fruits of one of the greatest hashtags to ever sprout on Twitter, let’s enjoy a collective cringe over the now infamous comment that Hunt made at the World Conference of Science Journalists in South Korea:

“Let me tell you about my trouble with girls. Three things happen when they are in the lab: you fall in love with them, they fall in love with you, and when you criticise them they cry.” – Tim Hunt

PS – Our lead image is a Tweet from Professor Sophie Scott of University College London, who researches the neuroscience of voices, speech and laughter. According to the New York Times, she was one of the first to react to Hunt’s comment on Twitter. As more scientists joined the conversation, the hashtag #TimHunt gave way to #distractinglysexy.
