The WYSKophiles of the world know we’re all about celebrating the extraordinary ingenuity, spirit and conviction of smart, savvy, everyday women who make things happen in their world. So, imagine our excitement when we stumbled upon what we’d consider our retail based equal in Smart Women. The inspired company, founded by Julie Hellwich, offers hip, practical products and gifts that “express the wit, intelligence, and smarts applied to the everyday experiences of extraordinary women.” C’mon… is this a match made in heaven or what?
The Smart Women shop is filled with fun and useful lifestyle items featuring retro illustrations and messages that make smart women think even harder. Their coffee mugs remind us to Work Together, their drinking glasses awaken our Thirst For Knowledge, their pencils make us Get To The Point, their coin purses remind us to Drive the Economy, their coasters make us Crave Good Company, their recipe cards advise us to Never Boil Over, their nifty notepads help us Make a List and Check it Twice with ease. And just in time for next Tuesday, November 6,their pins, magnets and stickers declare that Smart Women Vote.
As the site explains, “We want women to know that the things we do make a difference. By living and breathing our politics and convictions on a daily basis, (whether we’re running errands, running the office, or running FOR office) Smart Women change the world every day.” And to that we say, “Amen!”.
There is, of course, a WYSKy woman with a really cool story behind the Smart Women Company. It all started in 1999, when Julie, a stay-at-home mom at the time (she has two daughters; born 18 years apart), made a few gifts for friends. The business offered Julie a means to work and spend time with her toddler. But, the style and wit of the products struck a nerve and quickly captured the attention of smart women everywhere. Eventually, her products found their way into specialty gift shops across the country and around the globe.
Fueled by her do-it-yourself spirit, creative vision, and commitment to community, Julie’s Smart Women product collection continues to put a contemporary spin on the classic domestic arts she learned from her clever Midwestern grandmothers, Betty and Gert.
