“When they say I throw like a girl, I say girls can rule the world”

Lexi and Maddy, two 12-year-old sixth graders at a middle school just outside of Chicago, were “tired of boys bullying them and telling them that they did things ‘like a girl.'” So they channeled their frustrations into creative energy and wrote lyrics for a song they call “Throw Like A Girl.” With the help of their teacher’s aide, Mark Wlodarski, they put the song to music, recorded it and made a music video to “inspire other girls who have been put down and bullied.”

Mark, who makes educational songs to help his students in certain subjects, told WYSK, “They showed me their lyrics, and I thought they were really good and that it was an important message for girls. So I asked them if they wanted to make a song and music video about it.” He added, “For about a month we spent lunch and study hall recording the song and video.”

He made it a point to note that the video was not made for a grade or a requirement for school. The girls (Lexi and Maddy, along with their friends/background vocalists and dancers Gianna, Mary Clare and April) “just really wanted to show that ‘like a girl’ is not a negative thing and girls should be proud of who they are and can accomplish anything.”

Throw Like A Girl (lyrics by Lexi and Maddy)

Don’t dare push me around, no you can’t put me down
Take your mean words out the door, I’m a girl watch me soar
Cuz I got big hopes and I got big dreams, I will fly high and spread my wings, cuz
Girls they can do anything, I’m with my friends I’m with my team

You say I throw like a girl but I say girls can rule the world, thanks for the compliment
Like a girl, like a girl that sentence makes me wanna hurl but I stay confident

And you say that girls aren’t tough but hey boy I could beat you up
But you’re way too nice for that, you’re too nice for that
You got too much sugar and spice for that
Yeah I have strength and I have power, you’re a thorn and I’m a flower
I’m gonna do big things someday, I don’t care what haters say

When they say I throw like a girl I say girls can rule the world, thanks for the compliment
Yeah like a girl, like a girl that sentence makes me wanna hurl but I stay confident

Yeah we can do it, we’ll keep on shining, No we’re not hiding, we’ll keep on fighting
Yeah we can do it, we’ll keep on shining, No we’re not hiding, reach the horizon

You say that girls aren’t tough but now you know what’s up
Cuz you ain’t got time for that, you’re too nice for that
You got too much sugar and spice for that
