Last year we introduced you to the awesome children’s alphabet book Rad American Women A To Z, by Kate Schatz and illustrated by Miriam Klein Stahl. Not surprisingly the book became a New York Times bestseller and had readers clamoring for more. So, the dynamic duo went back to the drawing board and has just released their latest must have… Rad Women Worldwide.
In their new edition, Kate and Miriam share a collection of 40 biographical profiles of women from around the world. Each of the incredibly engaging, and inspiring tales of perseverance are accompanied by striking papercut portraits, which Miriam created using paper, pencil, and an X-Acto knife.
“We hope this book inspires readers of all ages and all genders, and opens hearts and minds to the vast radness of women across the globe.”
Just like its first edition, Rad Women Worldwide aims to bring to light the names and accomplishments of women whose stories are not often told. The book features a range of diverse figures from Hatshepsut (the great female king who ruled Egypt peacefully for two decades) and Malala Yousafzi (the youngest person to win the Nobel Peace Prize) to Poly Styrene (legendary teenage punk and lead singer of X-Ray Spex) and Liv Arnesen and Ann Bancroft (polar explorers and the first women to cross Antarctica).
WYSK spoke with Kate to learn more about the inspiration for the new book and the selection process, which we imagine was no easy feat.
“It was much harder to select the women this time around because instead of 250 years of history from one country, we were dealing with the entire world and all of time! Way more women, and a much bigger learning curve,” Kate said. “Our aim was to strike a balance in terms of region/continent; time period; well-known vs obscure/lesser-known; and what the women did (art, science, sports, politics, etc). We hope this book inspires readers of all ages and all genders, and opens hearts and minds to the vast radness of women across the globe. In times like this we need all the powerful female role models we can get!”
Rad Women Worldwide is a book for children (age 9+) and their parents, teachers, and cool grown-up friends who like women who rock! Available now.
