A few of us had a really fun, epicurean adventure earlier this week at the De Gustibus Cooking School, which is tucked away on the 8th floor of the world famous Macy’s Herald Square in NYC. This is not the home of a typical cooking class… this place is serving up culinary theater of the highest and finest caliber. De Gustibus scores some of the country’s best chefs (legends and up-and-comers) to teach and entertain, all while preparing multi-course meals for food lovers to savor and enjoy in an intimate, classroom style setting.

We took Chef Stephanie Izard’s class because we think she rocks… and because we posted about her in our 2011 Thanksgiving Special series on women chefs. Stephanie is probably most well known as the first and only woman in the history of Bravo’s Emmy Award-Winning Series Top Chef to win the show’s title. She’s also owner and executive chef of Chicago’s Girl & The Goat, dubbed “America’s best new restaurant” by Saveur Magazine and nominated for the 2011 James Beard Best New Restaurant Award.

Chef Stephanie Izard De GustibusOur evening went like this: Chef Stephanie charmed us with her “what you see is what you get” personality, amused us with her real life and chef-ing anecdotes, and got our palates dancing with her no nonsense approach to her craft – creating delicious food with fresh, seasonal ingredients. While she was busy at work on the culinary “stage”, we ate through 6 courses, each prepared with a blend of insanely tasty flavors, and meticulous attention to presentation. With bellies full and mouths happy, us WYSK-ers then had the chance to meet Stephanie and chat with her for a bit. To know her is to love her. AND… after the 2.5 hour class she was even gracious enough to sign a copy of her newest cookbook for us – Girl In The Kitchen: How A Top Chef Cooks, Thinks, Shops, Eats, And Drinks.

But, we couldn’t have all this fun and not let you in on a little of it. That’s why we decided to put our signed copy of Stephanie’s cookbook up for grabs.     Having attended quite a few DeGustibus cooking classes, I can say that it is well worth it. The classes are lively, fun, educational, and most of all, quite filling – gastronomically, that is!!
