“If you were a tennis player who would you want to be like?”
Using actual archival footage from an interview with a then unknown, young girl from Compton who went on to become the most prolific tennis player of our generation, this is how Gatorade’s new “Unmatched” spot featuring Serena Williams opens.
Through a montage of clips, it goes on to offer a glimpse at her rise to greatness, punctuated by the tagline “Win from Within”. It’s inspiring, it’s powerful, and it’s about time we start seeing brands celebrating the achievements of women.
So how did young Serena answer that reporter’s question years ago? At the close of the spot, they cut back to that same interview and you see her smile big and confidently say…
“I’d like other people to be like me.”
Beyond this spot, which is the first in a series of 4 about the tennis great, Adweek reported that Gatorade also commissioned 21 pieces of artwork to represent each of Williams’ past wins at the majors—the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. They were combined into a mural in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
