Combining Breastfeeding With Snark Makes For One “Very Crafty” 6 Panel Comic

An oldie, but a great-ie, you should know ‘Very Crafty,’ this 6 panel comic by writer and artist Heather Cushman-Dowdee, the creator of Hathor the Cowgoddess and Mama Is, comics about breastfeeding, homebirthing, attachment parenting and motherhood. “The combination of breastfeeding, snarky response, and craft” inspired a whole lot of people (including us) to love it, which is one reason Heather counts ‘Very Crafty’ as her “Best Breastfeeding Comic Of 2010.” Second reason? It more than tripled the traffic to her blog, over 6 years ago.

What Else You Should Know About Heather

In 2013, Heather stopped cartooning because she says, “the comics felt complete.” So she filled four books with “the best, in your face, breastfeeding” cartoons from her collection of more than ten years of Hathor the Cowgoddess and Mama Is. Together, the quartet of volumes includes, “every comic about nursing in public, the benefits of breastmilk, breastfeeding from the Mama’s and the Baby’s point of view, and the antics of a mama pushed to the edge of outrage and exhibitionism.”

Today, Heather spends her days writing novels under the pen name, H.D. Knightley. While most of her novels have breastfeeding characters, or attachment parenting moms, or baby-wearers in them, her latest Leveling, a novella, does not. Rather, she describes it as a “short, sexy, romantic romp of a book.” Think we just found our next beach read!
