When YouTube makeup artist Shalom Nchom was just 9 years old, she was burned by cooking oil at her mother’s restaurant in Nigeria. The accident left her with severe burns on her face, head, shoulders and chest. In addition to the obvious physical pain, Shalom also endured a great deal of emotional pain when children started bullying her for looking different.
After moving to the United States with her aunt to undergo reconstructive surgery, Shalom discovered makeup and started to use it to help cover her scars. It took her some time, but over the years Shalom has learned to love herself, and today, is using her new found confidence and skills to help and inspire others.
“You should love yourself either way—makeup or no makeup,” Shalom says in the video. “Makeup is not the reason why I am happy. I’m happy because I love myself.”
