We were recently introduced to the incredible artistry of Ele Willoughby, and were especially taken by her prints featuring women in science. It’s not every day that we find someone working to preserve and bring awareness to the women heroes who have discovered, created and furthered our world through science, so we reached out to Ele to learn more about her, her work and the inspiration for the series.

When she isn’t creating art, Ele works as a marine geophysicist. She has a doctorate in physics and has worked as a research scientist in academia and government for many years. Much of her art has been influenced by science.“I view art as a means of communicating science, and the history of science,” Ele tells WYSK in an email. “I’m particularly interested in telling untold stories and bringing attention to underrepresented or underappreciated groups in science and women in particular. As a woman in physics I know how invisible women can feel in fields where they are vastly outnumbered.”

Ele’s women in science series started by featuring some of her own heroes, such as Chien-Shiung Wu, Inge Lehmann and Lise Meitner. In 2014 she was invited to a group show featuring portraits of women in STEM at the Art Science Gallery in Austin, TX, which inspired Ele to expand the series. Since, Ele creates a new portrait every year to commemorate Ada Lovelace Day.

In addition to the scientist pieces, Ele also creates some fantastic and fantastical prints inspired by natural history, alphabet letters, the zodiac and other genres; she also accepts commissions.

You can check out all of Ele’s work at Etsy. Prints range from about $20-$50. Here are just a few of our favorites…
