A young, 20-something artist/photo editor behind the Let There Be Doodles tumblr page, is getting lots of attention this week compliments of a series of Racebent Disney princesses that were released. By drawing some of Disney’s most famous ladies as different races than they were originally created, the artist has cast a beautiful light on what a whole new world of diversity from Disney could (and should) look like.
Currently majoring in illustration, TT, who has been drawing since childhood, released the first group of five princesses (Tiana, Pocahontas, Belle, Aurora, Ariel) explaining, “I saw some beautiful ‘racebent’ Disney a while ago and wanted to try it out.” The artist added, “There wasn’t really any rhyme or reason to my choices, I just started fiddling with the images and these happened.” TT then released the second group of characters (Snow White, Cinderella, Jasmine, Megara) a few days later.
“I create racebent characters simply for fun and because I’d love to see more diversity in our media.” – TT
In response to a follower’s question posted to the artist’s tumblr page about the racebent series, TT answered, “I honestly just did this for fun. No political agenda, no ulterior motives, I just love Disney and chose a few of my favorite characters to alter. I would love to edit a version of every Disney character, but I chose these women to start with.”
TT went on, “I feel like there’s beauty in every racial background, and this is honestly nothing more than an exploration of different races from a technical and artistic standpoint. I didn’t take into account any story-lines or accuracy, simply character design. I just thought it would be fun to see some of our ladies in a different light.”
