Everyone knows the name Alfred Hitchcock. But how about Alma Reville? Probably not. Well, you should because she was quite a woman. In addition to being Hitchcock’s wife and partner, Alma was also the legendary filmmaker’s assistant director and closest collaborator, having contributed to all of his films, usually uncredited.

The extent of Alma’s behind-the-scenes support of Alfred’s work and the depth of their partnership will come to light on the big screen this November 23rd when HITCHCOCK, a love story about the Master of Suspense and the great woman behind him, opens in theaters nationwide.

Here is a little back story as to how this movie making, power couple came to be off-screen. Alma started working in movies before Hitchcock did. According to Biography.com, her first job was working as a tea girl at a motion picture studio, where she quickly rose through the ranks. Throughout the 1920s and ’30s, she worked as an assistant director, a screenwriter and an editor on a number of films. By 1923, Hitchcock was an assistant director and Alma had lost her job, so he called her asking if she would edit his film, Woman to Woman. That marked the beginning of their collaborative movie making partnership, which would span almost 60 years.

Alfred and AlmaIn 1926, Alma married Alfred Hitchcock and took on the moniker “Lady Hitchcock”, in part, because of her unwavering support of her husband. This, along with her vision and talent, made Alma indispensable to Alfred. It is said that if Hitchcock was interested in a story for a potential film project, he presented it to Alma before anyone else. If she didn’t think it would make a good movie, he instantly dropped it.

But Alfred Hitchcock, himself, summed up the critical role that Alma played in his career and life best, during his acceptance of the American Film Institute’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 1979, “Among those many people who have contributed to my life, I ask permission to mention by name only four people who have given me the most affection, appreciation, and encouragement, and constant collaboration. The first of the four is a film editor. The second is a scriptwriter. The third is the mother of my daughter, Pat. And the fourth is a fine a cook as ever performed miracles in a domestic kitchen. And their names are Alma Reville.”

So, check out the trailer for HITCHCOCK below. The film takes place during the making of Hitchcock’s ground breaking movie PSYCHO in 1959 and has a killer cast: Anthony Hopkins (Alfred Hitchcock), Helen Mirren (Alma Reville) Jessica Biel (Vera Miles), Scarlett Johansson (Janet Leigh), Toni Collette (Peggy Robertson), Ralph Macchio (Joe Stefano), etc. We’re really excited about this one.

I have NEVER heard of Alma Reville… but it sounds like Alfred Hitchcock might not have been who he was without her. Very cool story. The movie looks awesome.

I guess that old saying that there is a woman behind every great man is definitely true. Movie looks really intriguing. Great cast. I just looked up who will play the role of Anthony Perkins. James D’Arcy does look somewhat like a young Anthony Perkins.
